Chapter 3: On the virtue of contentment

The man with no shoes

I had never complained of the turns of fortune, nor frowned at the turning of the sky, except once — when my feet were bare and I had not the means to buy shoes.

I went into the great mosque of Kufa heavy-hearted, and saw a man who had no feet. I gave thanks for what I had been given, and bore my shoelessness with patience.

مرغِ بریان به چشمِ مردمِ سیر کمتر از برگِ سبزِ خوار بُوَد

وان که را دستگاه و قوت نیست شلغمِ پخته مرغِ بریان است

To a full man's eye, roast fowl is worth less than a worthless green leaf. And to one with no means and no strength, a boiled turnip is roast fowl.
